These workshops are designed to immerse participants in the world of rocket stoves.

Taught by earth bender & stove expert Viva Hansen.

Attended as a series, this course includes the construction of two rocket stoves over two weeks, a new stove each week, with weekends off.

This is an advanced Rocket Mass Heater course designed to explore clean combustion; from principles, to building and arranging advanced Rocket Stoves and Rocket Mass Heater systems.

This is a hands-on class in which students will experience several Rocket Stove types, change their configurations and experience the differences, similarities, advantages and disadvantages of system types firsthand. Covering Dakota Fire Pits, L-Tube and J-Tube design, and Batch Box Rocket Stoves, this course integrates hands-on construction of stoves with lectures, demonstrations, and AMAs.

  • In the first week (August 7th - 11th) of the course we will build an 8” J-Tube style Rocket Mass Heater inside of a 10’x12’ cob studio.

  • In the second week (August 14th - 18th) we will build an 8” Batch Box Rocket to act as the primary heat source for a cob sauna. Week 2 is postponed till later notice.

  • The third week (August 21st - 25th) we will build another 8” Batch Box (this time with an adjacent heated bench) to supply primary heat to a 30’ yurt. Week 3 is Canceled.

Although each week acts as its own standalone workshop, we have designed the course to support those wanting to immerse themselves in the rocket stove world, and finish the course feeling confident and sufficiently prepared to build a Rocket Mass Heater on their own.

Although building a rocket stove is relatively simple, a well functioning and long-lasting stove necessitates careful construction and an eye for detail. Thus it is our position that supervised repetition and review in the presence of a qualified teacher is critical for those seeking confidence in this craft.

About the Instructor

VIVAMARÉE ZÖE HANSEN (Viva)

Viva (mudbloodbuilds.com) is a longtime builder. He was introduced to cob through his mother Claudine Desirée of Cruzin’ Cob Global who studied with Michael G. Smith in 2001. Viva spent countless afternoons in his backyard mixing mud with his mom to help build the first legalized cob structure in Santa Cruz, CA.

It wasn’t long before Viva started experimenting with pizza ovens, garden walls, and eventually whole buildings on his own. His love for earthwork took him across the world from West Africa and South America to Mexico and Europe. He’s built numerous structures and taught in many workshops. He currently resides in Colorado, specializing in low-tech, high-efficiency, wood-fired appliances.

In 2022 Viva launched Mudblood Builds as a way to collect and focus his work in a more distinct direction. He chose the name Mudblood as a reminder of the simultaneous power and danger of racial and genetic politics which shape our relationship to land, our right to life, and our access to the critical resources of the earth. Human health and the health of the earth are inextricable. Mud is in our blood, and the flesh and blood of the Earth is mud...

Mudblood serves to preserve this symbiosis.
